Cultivation method
Sowing can be done directly in open ground in late May or early June, when the soil temperature reaches 25°C . For an earlier harvest, it is possible to start the plants indoors 2 to 3 weeks before the last frosts , then transplant them when the soil is well warmed.
To improve germination, soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours and scarify lightly before sowing. Space plants 16 to 18 inches apart , with 24 to 36 inches between rows , to ensure good air circulation and reduce disease .
This zucchini requires moderate but regular watering , avoiding wetting the foliage to prevent the appearance of powdery mildew. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and protect the fruit from direct contact with the earth.
Harvesting and conservation
Zucchini should be harvested young , between 12 and 18 cm long , when their skin is still smooth and shiny . Picking every other day helps to stimulate continued production and prevents the fruit from becoming too large and fibrous.
Fresh zucchini are perishable and should be consumed within 3 to 4 days . They can be stored in the refrigerator at 1-2°C with a humidity level of 90% . They can also be sliced and frozen , or used in ratatouille, soup or gratin for longer storage.
With its rapid growth , excellent productivity and tender, tasty flesh , the grey zucchini is an ideal variety for amateur gardeners and summer cooking enthusiasts!
