Description

Organic 'Painted Mountain' corn ( Zea mays ) from the seed company Gaia, a rustic and colorful gem

Organic 'Painted Mountain' corn is an exceptional variety, carefully selected for over 40 years by Dave Christensen in the mountains of Montana. From a blend of approximately 80 native corn varieties , it is distinguished by its vibrantly colored kernels – red, purple, orange, gold – that create a unique visual spectacle .

Designed to survive in extreme climates , this corn tolerates cold temperatures as well as intense heat , drought and strong winds . Its early maturation cycle and high content of anthocyanins , natural antioxidants, make it a popular variety for flour, semolina and nutritional preparations .

Did you know?

Colorful corn like 'Painted Mountain' was grown by the indigenous peoples of North America , not only for its high nutritional value , but also for its symbolism . Each color represented a force of nature or a sacred element.

In addition to being a valuable agricultural heritage , this corn is rich in antioxidants , particularly anthocyanins , which play an important role in cellular protection and cardiovascular health .

Spread: Upright and vigorous
Plant height: 150 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 50 seeds

Cultivation method

'Painted Mountain' corn is ideal for harsh climates due to its adaptation to extreme conditions . Sow directly when the soil reaches 19°C , in open ground and in full sun , to ensure optimum growth.

Sow 1 to 2 inches (2.5-5 cm) deep , spacing plants 8 to 10 inches (20-25 cm) apart and rows 24 to 36 inches (60-90 cm) apart . For effective pollination , plant in blocks of several rows rather than in isolated rows .

Corn needs regular watering , especially when the ears are forming . For traditional companion planting, combine it with climbing beans , which fix nitrogen in the soil, and squash , which maintain moisture and prevent weeds from spreading ( three sisters technique).

Harvesting and conservation

Harvesting : Wait until the silks on the cobs are dry and the kernels have reached full color before harvesting. If you want to use it for flour, let the cobs dry on the plant for as long as possible.
Drying : Remove the husks from the cobs, bundle them and hang them in a dry, well-ventilated place for a few weeks.
Use : This corn is not eaten fresh , but is perfect for flour, polenta, soups, tortillas and even popcorn if harvested young .
