The 'National Pickling' cucumber is an heirloom variety developed by the National Pickle Packers Association , specially bred for canning and pickling . Its short, thick, slightly blunt 12-13 cm fruits absorb the flavors of the brine perfectly, while maintaining a firm, crisp texture .

Highly productive and offering early harvests in just 52 days , it is also resistant to cucumber mosaic virus and scab , ensuring a healthy and abundant crop .

Cultivation method

Seeds should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours and scarified before sowing for better germination .

Sowing can be done directly in the open ground after the last frosts , or started indoors 3 to 4 weeks before planting for an advanced harvest.

National Pickling appreciates well-drained soil, rich in organic matter and full sun exposure . Space plants 30 to 60 cm apart and rows 60 to 90 cm apart.

Harvesting and conservation

Harvest cucumbers every 1 to 2 days , when they are 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm ), to preserve their crisp texture and encourage continued production .

They can be stored for up to 10 days in the refrigerator at 10-12°C with 95% humidity . For long-term storage , they can be brined or marinated .
