Organic catnip ( Nepeta cataria ) – offered by Gaia, a perennial plant with multiple benefits
Catnip , also called catmint , is an aromatic perennial plant that irresistibly attracts felines thanks to nepetalactone , a natural stimulant compound. In addition to being a pleasure plant for cats, it is also appreciated for its soothing properties in humans, often used in infusion to promote relaxation and sleep .
Easy to grow, it thrives both in the ground and in pots , and its silvery foliage and mauve flowers make it a lovely addition to herb gardens and flower borders. A melliferous plant , it attracts pollinators and repels some harmful insects , including mosquitoes and aphids.

Before sowing, it is recommended to stratify the seeds by placing them in the refrigerator overnight and then soaking them in warm water for 12 to 24 hours to speed up germination.
Sowing can be done indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost , or directly in the open ground after the last frost. Catnip appreciates well-drained soils and a sunny or slightly shaded location . Once well established, it is drought-resistant and requires little maintenance .
Harvesting and conservation
To preserve the aromatic richness of catnip, it is advisable to harvest the leaves and flowers in dry weather , in the middle or late afternoon, once the dew has evaporated. Be careful to handle the leaves with care , as they bruise easily.
