Cultivation method
Sowing can be done directly in open ground in late May or early June, when the soil reaches 25°C . For an earlier harvest, it is possible to start the plants indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then transplant them once the soil has warmed up .
To improve germination , soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours and scarify lightly before sowing. Space plants 16 to 18 inches apart, with 24 to 36 inches between rows , to allow them to spread well.
This squash appreciates heat , rich and well-drained soil , and moderate but regular watering , without wetting the foliage to avoid disease.
Harvesting and conservation
The fruits are ripe when their skin becomes hard and difficult to mark with the fingernail . The spot on the ground also changes color , from light yellow to cream or orange .
To avoid any rotting, it is advisable to cut the squash leaving 5 cm of stem . Then leave it to ripen in a dry and warm place for 1 to 2 weeks , which will improve its conservation.
Once well hardened, the squashes can be stored for several months in a cool place (10-12°C), at 55-75% humidity and with good air circulation .
