Cultivation method
Irish Molucella is an annual plant that self-sows , ideal for a garden with a natural and romantic style.
- Cold stratify the seeds for 2 weeks by placing the seeds in a damp cloth in the refrigerator.
- Sow indoors in spring, 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost , pressing the seeds lightly onto the surface of the substrate without covering them, as they require light to germinate .
- Ideal germination temperature: 18 to 20°C . Germination can take 14 to 28 days .
- Transplant into the ground when outdoor temperatures reach 10°C and the risk of frost has passed .
- Spacing: 25 to 30 cm (10-12") between plants and 40 to 45 cm (16-18") between rows .
- Moderate watering , as the plant tolerates relatively dry conditions well.
To prolong flowering , remove faded flowers and regularly harvest the stems when fully ripe.
Harvesting and conservation
- Harvest the stems when the green bracts are fully open , usually 90 to 110 days after sowing .
- For use in fresh bouquets , immediately place cut stems in water.
- To dry , hang them upside down in a dark, ventilated place for 2 to 3 weeks . Once dried, they retain their shape and color , perfect for dried arrangements.
Ideas for use in the garden and in decoration
- Integrate it into flower beds for a touch of verticality and texture.
- Pair it with pastel flowers like peonies, roses and delphiniums for a romantic vibe.
