Description

Organic 'Mrocuimere' bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris ) – offered by Gaia, a rare and prolific variety

Originating from Kenya, the 'Mrocuimere' bean is a rare heirloom variety with eye-catching, bright purple pods that hold mild-tasting, creamy- textured beans that are perfect for soups and other stews. Hardy and easy to grow, it adapts well to temperate climates and provides a generous harvest throughout the season.

Valued for its vigorous growth, this climbing bean benefits from being grown on a trellis or alongside corn , in the "three sisters" tradition. It prefers rich, well-drained soil and full sun exposure for optimal development.

Did you know?

In Kenya, this bean variety has been cultivated for generations for its excellent nutritional value and adaptation to local conditions. Its purple color disappears when cooked, revealing light, tender beans, highly prized in traditional cuisine.

Spread : Climbing plant requiring support
Plant height : 1.5 to 2 m
Quantity per pack : ± 30 seeds
Companion plants : Corn, carrot, cabbage, cucumber, peas, radish, potato, squash, nasturtium, rosemary
Enemy plants : Alliums (onions, garlic, leek), beetroot

Cultivation method

Before sowing, soak the seeds in hot water (max 8 hours) to improve germination. Soaking them for too long may damage them. Sow directly in the open ground after the last frosts. To prolong the harvest, sow successively every 3 weeks .

  • Sowing depth : 2-3 cm
  • Spacing between plants : 8-10 cm
  • Row spacing : 45-60 cm
  • Exposure : Full sun
  • Watering : Moderate, avoid excess humidity

Harvesting and conservation

Pods should be harvested when they are fully developed and firm. For dried beans , allow the pods to fully mature on the plant , then dry them in a well-ventilated area before storing. Freezing is preferred for long-term storage.

With its beautiful purple color , its creamy taste and its ease of cultivation , the 'Mrocuimere' bean is a real asset to the vegetable garden. It will delight both passionate gardeners and lovers of authentic flavors! 🌱
