Astragalus ( Astragalus membranaceus ) is a hardy perennial plant , cultivated for its roots with exceptional medicinal properties . Cultivation method
Seeds require 3 weeks of cold stratification , followed by moderate scarification to promote germination . Soak seeds in water for one hour , then sow in winter or early spring . Cover with a thin layer of soil (1/8-1/4 inch) and keep the soil slightly moist . Germination takes 3-10 days at 60°F . Space plants 15-16 inches apart. Astragalus will reseed naturally once established.
Harvesting and conservation
Wait two years before harvesting the main root , while taking 30% of the small side roots each year to allow for a sustainable harvest . Fresh roots can be air- dried or dried at low temperatures for longer storage.
