Organic white yarrow (Achillea millefolium), offered by Gaia, a medicinal and honey-producing perennial
White yarrow ( Achillea millefolium ) is a hardy perennial plant , prized for its flat-topped white flowers , which attract a multitude of pollinators . It is renowned for its medicinal properties and its ability to thrive in poor soils , while also playing a beneficial role in vegetable gardens and orchards . Growing to about 90 cm in height , it spreads slowly , and staking may be necessary in windy areas. Resistant to drought and cold , it is ideal for a natural or wild garden .
Plant height: 90 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 200 seeds
Companion plants: Brassicaceae, coriander, thyme, rosemary, oregano, lavender, garlic, tomato, berries, fruit trees
Enemy plants: Squash, zucchini, pumpkin, melon, cucumber
Cultivation method
Seeds require cold stratification for 2 to 4 weeks before sowing. Sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks before planting out in the ground. Plants can be set out even if the soil is still moist , as yarrow tolerates frost . Exposure to full sun , in well-drained, poor soil, will encourage abundant flowering and robust growth.
Harvest and use
The flowers should be harvested when they are fully open , before they turn yellow or brown. The leaves can be picked all year round , but they are more concentrated in active ingredients in spring and early summer . Yarrow is used as an infusion, tincture or poultice for its anti-inflammatory, digestive and healing properties.
Botanical anecdote
Yarrow has been used since ancient times for its medicinal properties. Its name comes from Achilles , the mythological hero, who is said to have used it to treat the wounds of his soldiers. It is also known as "military herb" for this reason.
