A Touch of Exoticism and Originality
Seeds of Physalis alkekengi (Physalis franchetti) , offered by the seed company OSC.
Bring a vibrant touch to your garden with Chinese Lanterns. Their orange, lantern-shaped seed pods, which appear in August and September, are as beautiful in the garden as they are in dried flower arrangements. These hardy perennials grow to about 2 feet tall and thrive in rich, slightly acidic soils. Hardy to zone 3 with winter protection, they will thrive in zone 4 without protection.
Spread: 60 cm.
Plant height: 60 cm.
Quantity per pack: Approx 100 seeds/pkt.
Companion plants: Echinacea, rudbeckia, ornamental grasses.
Enemy plants: Plants requiring poor or very dry soil.
How to Grow:
Start indoors in a soilless mix before early March. Seeds germinate in 20-25 days at 68°F (20°C). Do not cover, as light encourages germination. Grow under lights, harden off, then replant 2 feet apart in the garden once the risk of frost has passed. These plants spread rapidly by underground stems, so keep them under control to prevent them from becoming invasive.
Chinese Lanterns add a unique and lasting charm to your outdoor space and floral designs, a perfect choice for lovers of originality and hardy perennials.
