Perfect for Pickling

Chicago Cucumber Seeds (Cucumis sativus), offered by OSC Seeds

Chicago cucumber plants deliver high yields of perfectly shaped, dark green fruits with black spines. These thin-skinned cucumbers absorb pickling solutions beautifully and can grow up to 12.5 cm without sacrificing quality. Typically harvested smaller, they are ideal for making some of the best pickles this side of Chicago! Resistant to scab and cucumber mosaic virus, this heirloom variety was introduced in 1888.

Planting and Care:
Cucumbers thrive in rich, warm, well-drained soil. Amend the soil with compost or manure before planting. Wait until the soil temperature reaches at least 18 °C to sow seeds. Form mounds 15–20 cm high and 30–60 cm in diameter, spaced 120 cm apart. Sow 6–8 seeds per mound at a depth of 2 cm, thinning to 3–4 plants after germination (7–10 days). Trellising can save space and improve fruit quality. Maintain consistent watering to prevent bitterness caused by drought stress. Harvest cucumbers by cutting them from the vine with a sharp knife to avoid damaging the plants.
