For best growth, sow seeds indoors in early spring. Plant one seed per cell 1 inch (2 cm) deep in seed starting mix, water thoroughly, and cover the tray with a clear plastic bag or place in a propagator. Once the seeds have germinated, remove the covers and water regularly to maintain moisture. Transplant the seedlings into 3-inch (9 cm) pots when they are 3 inches (8 cm) tall and have three true leaves.

Gradually acclimate the plants to outdoor conditions in late spring, increasing their exposure each day. Transplant them into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun in early summer, spacing them 18 inches apart. Plant deeply, burying the lowest leaves below soil level, and install strong supports such as stakes or wire spirals to support their vertical growth.

Harvest fruits as soon as they reach full maturity by breaking off their short stems where they join the vine. Harvest outdoor crops before the first frost, as tomatoes do not tolerate cold. Never store them in the refrigerator to preserve their flavor and texture. Unripe fruits can be brought indoors to ripen. Finally, explore recipes for homemade chutneys or preserves with tomatoes that are still green.
