For best results, sow seeds indoors in early spring. Plant one seed per cell 2cm (1in) deep in seed starting mix, water thoroughly and cover the tray with a clear plastic bag or place in a propagator. Once the seedlings have germinated, remove the covers, water regularly and transplant into 9cm pots once they are about 8cm (3in) tall and have three true leaves.

Acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions by gradually moving them outside in late spring. Transplant in early summer, once the risk of frost has passed, into fertile soil in full sun, spacing them 18 inches apart. Plant deeply, burying the lowest leaves below ground level. Provide strong supports such as stakes or wire spirals, and tie the stems loosely with garden twine.

Harvest fruits as soon as they reach full maturity by breaking off their short stems. Harvest outdoor crops before the first frost, as tomatoes do not tolerate cold. Never store them in the refrigerator to preserve their flavor and texture. Unripe fruits can be brought indoors to ripen, while green tomatoes can be used to make chutneys or homemade preserves.
