To get started, fill seed trays or pots with seed compost. Make a hole about 5mm in the centre, drop in a seed, cover lightly with soil and water well. Place the pots in a propagator or cover with a clear plastic bag to create a mini greenhouse, then place on a bright, warm windowsill in early spring. Once the seeds have germinated, remove the covers to reduce humidity and water regularly.
Transplant the seedlings into progressively larger pots when they are about 8cm tall and have three true leaves. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions in late spring, exposing them for increasing periods each day for two weeks, then transplant them into containers or into the open ground once the risk of frost has passed.
Plantation:
Use containers at least 9 inches (23 cm) in diameter, or prepare soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Plant young tomatoes a little deeper than they were growing in their pots, and water thoroughly to encourage good rooting.
Maintain consistent moisture for potted plants, especially in summer, with daily watering. Once flowers have formed, water regularly to keep the roots moist. Plants in the ground only require watering in dry weather, except during the flowering period when regular irrigation is essential.
Harvest the fruit when it is fully ripe and eat it quickly to enjoy its sweet flavor. Avoid storing it in the refrigerator, as this will affect its taste. In the fall, harvest any remaining fruit before the cold weather sets in and let it ripen indoors in a bowl. When picking, carefully remove the tomatoes, holding the stem in one hand and the fruit in the other.
