Cultivation method:
Sow seeds indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the expected last frost date. Germination can take about 3 weeks at a temperature of 21-24°C (70-75°F). Once the seedlings have emerged, transfer them to a bright location and adjust the temperature to 16°C (60°F).
Harden off seedlings before transplanting into fertile, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.0. Transplant into the garden between mid-May and mid-June, spacing the seedlings 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) apart in rows 36 inches (90 cm) apart.
To blanch the stems and give them a sweeter flavor, begin gently hilling up soil around the stems when the plants are about 12 inches (30 cm) tall. Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture throughout the growing season. Feed the plants with a balanced fertilizer to support optimal development.
