Description

Canada tick-trefoil (Desmodium canadense) , seeds by Marie-Victorin

Tick-trefoil (Desmodium canadense) is a hardy perennial legume that is ideal for naturally enriching soils due to its ability to fix nitrogen. Adapted to moist, clayey soils, it is perfect for ecological restoration projects and natural gardens. Its delicate purple flowers provide a subtle splash of color, while its imaginatively shaped fruits add unique visual interest and a fun way to scatter throughout the landscape.

Sowing instructions : Lightly scratch the surface of the seeds by rubbing them between two sandpapers to scarify them. Make sure that the inoculant (black powder) is in contact with the seeds. Then mix the seeds with an equal volume of sand or moist vermiculite. Place everything in an airtight plastic bag and leave it in the refrigerator for 30 to 90 days (cold stratification). Sow directly in the desired location in the spring, as soon as the temperature becomes suitable, or in the fall for natural germination the following spring.

Tick-trefoil is a versatile and eco-friendly plant, perfect for improving soil quality while adding beauty and biodiversity to gardens. Its hardiness and usefulness make it a great choice for renaturalization projects and low-maintenance spaces.
