A heritage vegetable appreciated by gardeners. Broccoli 'Green Sprouting' ( Brassica oleracea ), offered by the seed company OSC, is an old Italian variety ideal for generous harvests.
Cultivated for over 2,000 years, broccoli originated in the Mediterranean and has established itself as a staple vegetable around the world. ‘Green Sprouting’ is particularly prized for its earliness, ease of growing and robustness. Plants grow to 50cm tall and produce large, strong central heads, followed by numerous side shoots. Rich in vitamins A and C, folic acid and iron, this broccoli also contains sulforaphane, a compound known for its anti-cancer properties. Ideal for cool climates, it guarantees abundant and tasty harvests.
Spreading: Final spacing of 40 to 50 cm between plants
Plant height: 50 cm
Quantity per pack: Approximately 200 seeds (300 seeds/gram)
Companion plants: Carrots, beets, lettuce
Enemy plants: Tomatoes, strawberries
Cultivation method:
For early harvests, start seeds indoors in a soilless mix in late March to early April. Transplant seedlings outdoors in late April to early May, spacing them 18 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart. Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer (20-20-20). Keep soil weed-free and well-watered. Harvest the main head when the buds are tight and compact, before they flower. Cut below the main head, avoiding damaging the side shoots, which will prolong the harvest.
Seeds germinate in 7 to 10 days, and plants mature in 70 to 75 days. 'Green Sprouting' is a great option for gardeners looking for a productive, easy-to-grow broccoli.
