Balsam Fir: Canada's iconic tree

Balsam Fir 'Basalm Fir' seeds , offered by the OSC seed company

The balsam fir, a native Canadian tree, is a majestic and versatile conifer. It reaches between 15 and 20 m at maturity and fits perfectly into large landscapes. Highly prized for its role in the Christmas tree trade, it is also valued in the manufacture of paper pulp and lumber. Resilient and hardy, the balsam fir provides shelter for many wild animals, including moose. Deer, however, generally avoid this tree.

How to grow:

Natural stratification of seeds outdoors in winter is ideal. Sow 6mm deep in autumn, directly into well-drained soil in full sun. For an indoor method, mix the seeds with moist sterile potting soil, store in the fridge for 60 days, then plant in a sheltered spot in spring.

Balsam firs prefer fertile, open soil. Germination occurs in about 30 days after stratification. Balsam fir is a sustainable choice for natural, elegant landscapes while providing essential ecological utility.
