Cultivation method:

Start seedlings indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Sow seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in fertile potting soil and maintain a temperature of 70 to 80°F (21 to 26°C) to promote rapid germination. Once seedlings are 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) tall, transplant them into individual 4-inch (10 cm) pots and grow them on at a cooler temperature of 60 to 70°F (15 to 21°C).

Harden off seedlings gradually before transplanting outdoors once all danger of frost has passed. Plant seedlings in full sun in deep, fertile organic soil. Space seedlings 24 to 36 inches (60 to 90 cm) apart in the row and leave 6 feet (1.75 m) between rows.

Maintain even moisture by watering regularly. Mulch the soil with a thin layer at first, then increase to 10 cm (4 in) to conserve moisture and prevent the soil from overheating in summer. Protect plants from frost during their harvest year to ensure optimum production.
