From June to September, this tiny shrub produces an abundance of flowers and is considered low maintenance. Contains high amounts of tannins. An infusion of the root is used as an astringent to cleanse and soothe the skin. Some anti-wrinkle cosmetics even contain it as an ingredient. It has been proven to aid withdrawal from addictive alkaloids and is useful and effective as a detoxification agent. Used to make a mouthwash treating thrush infections as well as a gargle for periodontal disease and other gum and tooth problems, as it is also antibacterial.
Sowing: Seed stratification is necessary for 2 to 4 weeks. Sow seeds 8 to 10 weeks. before the last frost. Place them 8 to 18″ apart, overlapping them slightly. Potentilla prefers sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Thrives in a sunny spot in the garden, but likes some afternoon shade.
Harvesting: Its thick rhizome can be harvested to provide a crimson dye long used to color leather. The leaves and roots can be infused in a carrier oil and then made into a salve.
