Spearmint (Mentha spicata) – offered by Semences WH Perron
Spearmint is an aromatic plant prized for its leaves with a sweet and fruity scent. Versatile in cooking, it enhances dishes, drinks and desserts, while bringing an aesthetic touch to the garden thanks to its summery mauve flowers. Be careful, however, of its rapid expansion: this vigorous mint can become invasive if it is not contained.
Spread : 40 cm
Plant height : 30 to 60 cm
Quantity per packet : 200 seeds
Companion plants : Cabbage, broccoli, tomato, carrot
Enemy plants : Parsley, chamomile
Cultivation method:
Sow spearmint seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the last frost. Sprinkle the seeds lightly on moist, well-drained potting soil, then press them gently without covering them completely, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 65 to 72 degrees F (18 to 22 degrees C) to promote successful germination.
Transplant young plants to the garden or into pots when the risk of frost has passed, choosing a location with partial shade to full sun. Plant in moist, well-drained soil, spacing plants 12 to 16 inches apart. To limit its spread, grow spearmint in containers or demarcated areas.
Harvest the leaves regularly to stimulate new growth. Spearmint is a hardy and easy-to-grow plant that is ideal for adding flavor and freshness to your culinary creations.
