Yellow melon 'Siciliano' (Cucumis melo), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
The yellow melon 'Siciliano' is a traditional variety from southern Italy, known for its creamy white flesh, beautiful golden color, and delicate flavor. This unique melon is often harvested before it is fully ripe for storage and consumption in late fall or early winter, providing a touch of sweetness outside of the summer season. Fruits typically weigh between 5 and 8 pounds (2.5 to 4 kg) and store well after harvest.

Sow directly in a sheltered, south-facing location, placing 3-4 seeds per hill at a depth of 2.5cm (1"). Space hills 1.5-2m (4-6') apart. Once seedlings have emerged, thin to 3-4 plants per hill. In short-season areas, start seeds indoors in peat pots about 4 weeks before the last frost. The soil must be well warmed, with a minimum temperature of 21°C (70°F), to ensure good germination.
Maintain regular irrigation throughout the growing season. Melons are ready to harvest when they develop a golden hue and a light fragrance, although for this variety they can be picked a little earlier for extended storage.
