Description

Organic 'Sugar Baby' watermelon ( Citrullus lanatus ) from the seed company Gaia, a sweet and refreshing watermelon

The 'Sugar Baby' watermelon is an early heirloom variety prized for its bright red flesh , intensely sweet flavor , and compact size . Weighing in at 8-10 lbs , it's perfect for small gardens or container gardens , while still providing a juicy, refreshing flesh . Its thick, tough rind keeps well after harvest , making it a great choice for those who love tasty, easy-to-grow watermelons .

Did you know?

'Sugar Baby' is often used as a pollinator for triploid (seedless) watermelons , thanks to its abundant flowering. In addition to being appreciated for its sweet and refreshing taste , it is rich in lycopene , a powerful antioxidant that contributes to the protection of cells and the maintenance of good cardiovascular health .

Spread: Vigorous runner plant
Plant height: 30 to 50 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: Radish, corn, garlic, nasturtium, pumpkin, squash

Cultivation method

Soak seeds in warm water for 12 hours , then lightly scarify (scratch the surface) them to speed up germination . Sow indoors 2 weeks before transplanting or directly into the ground when soil temperatures are above 70°F (21°C) .

Plant 1.5 cm (1/2") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart, with rows 150 cm (60") apart. This variety tolerates heat well , but needs regular watering , especially during fruit formation .

Harvesting and conservation

Harvest the melon when the tendril near the fruit becomes dry and brown . Another indicator of ripeness is the lightening of the part in contact with the ground , which changes from green to creamy yellow .

Store at 7°C , with 85% humidity, where it can be kept for up to 3 weeks without losing its freshness.

Ideas for use in the garden and kitchen

  • Enjoy it plain , very cold, for maximum sweet flavor.
  • Blend it into smoothies or refreshing sorbets.
  • Add it to summer salads , with mint and feta.
  • Turn it into a granita for a light and hydrating dessert.
  • Make thirst-quenching drinks , like homemade watermelon juice.

With its juicy red flesh, irresistible sweetness and accessible cultivation , the 'Sugar Baby' watermelon is a must-have for a summer filled with freshness and deliciousness !
