Butterfly Weed

The butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), offered by Northern Wildflowers, is a striking perennial perfect for sunny, well-drained gardens. Its bright orange flowers, blooming from June to August, attract and nourish monarch butterflies, bees, and other essential pollinators. Unlike common milkweed, this species is less toxic and non-invasive, making it an excellent choice for borders and flower beds. Compact and bushy, it adds a unique and vibrant touch to any garden design.

Spread: 30 to 45 cm
Plant height: 30 to 60 cm
Seeds per packet: Approximately 150 seeds
Companion plants: Black-eyed Susan, blanket flower, lavender
Enemy plants: None known

Growing Tips:

For optimal germination, cold stratify the seeds by placing them in a moist substrate in the refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks, or sow them directly outdoors in the fall for natural germination. Plant seeds 1/8 inch deep in well-drained soil and keep the soil lightly moist until seedlings emerge. Once established, this hardy plant thrives in dry, sunny conditions with minimal maintenance.

Bring vibrant color and ecological benefits to your garden with butterfly weed, a must-have plant for supporting pollinators and monarchs.
