Did you know?
This wild variety was introduced to the United States by the University of Maine after being selected in Mexico. Its hardy character and high sugar content make it one of the tastiest cherry tomatoes
Spread: vigorous growth and sprawling habit
Plant height: 150 to 200 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, parsley, carrot, asparagus, alliums, celery, borage, marigold, calendula, mint, sage, peppers, dill (until maturity)
Enemy plants: potato, corn, kohlrabi, beetroot, fennel, peas, squash
Cultivation method
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting out, then transplant to open ground after the last frost , when night temperatures are above 12°C . Plant 3-6 mm (1/8-1/4") deep , spacing plants 60-90 cm (24-36") apart and rows 120-180 cm (4-6') apart. This indeterminate variety requires sturdy staking or plenty of room to spread, as it grows sprawlingly.
Harvesting and storage
Harvest tomatoes when they are fully bright red and firm. Their thin skin makes them particularly fragile , so it is best to eat them quickly after picking. You can also harvest them slightly immature and let them ripen off the vine at 22°C.
Store tomatoes at room temperature , in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. To prolong their shelf life, place them in a cool place (12-21°C) with a relative humidity of 95% . Avoid refrigerating them, as this alters their texture and taste.
Long-term preservation methods
Freezing: Freeze them whole to use later in sauces or soups
Drying: Cut them in half and let them dehydrate slowly for ultra-sweet sun-dried tomatoes
Preserve: Prepare a sweet tomato sauce or marinated tomatoes in olive oil
With its exceptional flavor, earliness and resistance to mildew, the 'Matt's Wild' Tomato is an ideal choice for lovers of sweet cherry tomatoes and gardens in humid climates.
