Organic Large Leaf Italian Basil ( Ocimum basilicum ), offered by Gaia , a sweet and fragrant flavor for Mediterranean cuisine
Italian large-leaf basil is an heirloom variety very close to Genovese , but with a more delicate leaf and a milder, sweeter flavor . It is a classic in tomato sauces , pestos, and Mediterranean dishes. Its large, aromatic foliage makes it a must-have choice for fresh basil lovers .
Its growth is slower , which allows for a prolonged harvest throughout the season. Easy to grow, it thrives both in the ground and in pots , provided it has plenty of sun and heat .
Did you know?
Basil loves to be pruned ! Pinching it regularly will encourage abundant production and prevent it from flowering too early, which will affect its taste.
Spread: Bushy habit
Plant height: 40-60 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 50 seeds
Companion plants: Tomato, pepper, asparagus, oregano, purslane
Enemy plants: Rue
Cultivation method
Sow indoors 6 weeks before the last frost , then transplant outdoors when all risk of frost has passed . Basil needs warmth to grow well: be careful not to expose it to temperatures that are too cold.
Plant it in rich, well-drained soil , in full sun. To prevent it from flowering too quickly , pinch the stems above the 2nd or 3rd pair of leaves as soon as the plant reaches 15 cm in height.
Harvesting and conservation
Harvest as needed, pinching off the top leaves to encourage new growth. For best flavor , harvest before the plant flowers.
Basil should not be stored in the refrigerator , as the cold will cause it to turn black . It is best to freeze it, air dry it or store it in olive oil.
