Description

Organic Cape Gooseberry ( Physalis peruviana ) – offered by Gaia, an exotic and easy to grow fruit

The Cape Gooseberry is a small, golden berry wrapped in a paper lantern that protects its delicate, fragrant fruit. Native to South America, this plant produces abundant fruit with a sweet, slightly tart flavor , reminiscent of a mix of mango, pineapple, and citrus .

Its vigorous growth makes it a perfect plant for vegetable gardens, containers and even urban gardens , as long as it benefits from well-drained soil and full sun exposure. It is self-pollinating , which means that a single plant is enough to obtain a good harvest!

Did you know?

Ground cherries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins A and C , and contain anti-inflammatory properties . They are often used fresh, in jams, in baking, or even dried like golden raisins .

Spread : Compact and bushy plant
Plant height : 60 to 90 cm
Quantity per pack : ± 100 seeds
Companion plants : Basil, parsley, carrot, onion, hot pepper
Enemy plants : Corn, potato, fennel, dill

Cultivation method

Seeds should be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out , then transplanted once all danger of frost has passed .

Reduce water and nitrogen input during hardening off to avoid excessive foliage growth to the detriment of fruit.

Although the plant is compact, staking may be necessary to support its branches when they bear a lot of fruit.

Harvesting and conservation

The fruits are ripe when their shell becomes brown and dry . For optimal conservation, they can be kept for several weeks in their protective shell .

They are eaten fresh, in compote, dried or in jam , and go well with both sweet and savory dishes.
