Basil 'Genovese' is an iconic Italian variety, renowned for its broad, dark green leaves , powerful aroma and sweet, intense flavour . It is ideal for pesto , salads , Mediterranean dishes and even some sweet preparations.

Used for centuries in cooking, it is prized for its rapid growth and ability to continually produce leaves when pruned regularly.

Cultivation method

Sow indoors 6 weeks before the last frost , then transplant into the ground or pots when night temperatures are above 10°C . Basil prefers full sun exposure , light, well-drained soil rich in organic matter , with moderate watering .

Harvesting and conservation

Pinch leaves as needed to encourage branching and prevent early flowering. To prolong production, cut back 6 cm from the ground . Store fresh leaves in the refrigerator, dry or freeze for extended use.

Recipe idea: Traditional 'Genovese' basil pesto

An authentic Italian recipe to enhance pasta, salads and toast.

Ingredients (for a small jar)

  • 50 g fresh 'Genovese' basil
  • 50 g grated parmesan
  • 30 g pine nuts
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 80 ml extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. Lightly toast the pine nuts in a dry pan to bring out their flavor.
  2. In a mortar (or blender), crush the garlic with a pinch of salt . Add the basil , pine nuts , then grind until you obtain a smooth paste.
  3. Add the grated Parmesan , then gradually pour in the olive oil while mixing.
  4. Adjust seasoning and store in an airtight jar.

💡 Tip : To prevent the pesto from turning black, cover it with a thin layer of olive oil before storing.
