Beans tolerate a wide range of soil types. They grow best in light, well-drained soil with a pH of around 6.5. Beans have a marked aversion to cold, wet soil, so only sow seeds after the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C). Sow 2.5 cm (1 in) deep and 8 cm (3 in) apart in rows 45 to 70 cm (18 to 28 in) apart.

To ensure a continuous harvest, sow bush-type varieties every 10 days until mid-July. Keep beans evenly watered, especially when plants are in the flowering stage and pod production begins to form. Avoid disturbing beans when leaves are wet to reduce the incidence of disease.
