Ecoumene / Leaf Lettuce ‘Black Seeded Simpson’ / Annual Type / Organic Seeds

We owe the selection of this famous leaf lettuce to the work of a seed company of Scottish origin who settled in Pennsylvania in the mid-nineteenth century. Peter Henderson & Co first offered it in its catalogue in 1875 and its popularity has continued ever since. Ten years later, it can be found in the world-renowned book “Les plantes Potagères” by the Frenchmen Vilmorin and Andrieux.

Its early maturity and the sweet flavor of its light green leaves, tender, crunchy and particularly juicy, quickly won unanimous approval on the American continent and elsewhere. Everywhere, people agree to praise the resistance to insects and diseases of its beautiful pleated leaves.

Like all lettuces, it likes cool temperatures, but it tolerates summer heat remarkably well. It can therefore be cultivated all season long. The first harvest, which consists of thinning the rows, will give a good quantity of young leaves less than a month after sowing. The leaves are mature about two weeks later.

Number of days for harvest: Young leaves: 28 | Mature leaves: 45
