Tourne-Sol / Green climbing bean ‘Rattlesnake’

Climbing Green Bean ‘Rattlesnake’, also known as Rattlesnake Rowing Bean, is a fascinating heirloom variety.

Origin of Name: The origin of the name is somewhat debated. Some attribute it to the rattle sound of the beans in the dried pods, while others relate it to the purple streaks on the pods, reminiscent of the skin of a rattlesnake.

Taste and Appearance: These beans offer a delicious flavor and tender texture. Their long green pods are adorned with beautiful purple streaks, making them visually appealing. They are often used in stir-fries, salads and side dishes.

The ideal planting time for Rattlesnake Beans is usually in spring, when the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Here are some tips for planting these beans:

Planting Date: Wait until daytime temperatures are stable around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). This usually happens in early spring, depending on your region.
Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Work the soil by adding compost or organic fertilizer to improve fertility.
Sowing: Sow seeds directly into the soil to a depth of about 2 to 3 cm (0.8 to 1.2 inches). Leave about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) of space between each seed.
Spacing: If planting in rows, space the rows about 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) apart.
Watering: Keep the soil moist during the germination period. Once the plants have emerged, reduce watering but make sure the soil remains slightly moist.
Stakes: Since these are climbing beans, install stakes or trellises to support the plants as they grow.
Harvest: Rattlesnake beans are ready to harvest approximately 60 to 70 days after planting.
