Originally from Italy, ‘San Marzano’ is an old selection renowned for the excellent flavor of its fruits with firm, dense flesh which contain few seeds and juice. Vigorous plants with indeterminate growth must be staked to support the weight of the numerous small, elongated, brick-red fruits. Lovers of tomato paste, Neapolitan tomato sauce and canned tomatoes will find what they are looking for with the classic ‘San Marzano’. These tomatoes are also very good in salads, which is not the case with all tomatoes of this type. Note that for gardeners in zone 3b and below, the late maturity of this tomato can pose a challenge.
