Thrives in open fields and along roadsides. Originating in North America, the widespread folk belief is that it can treat or alleviate the symptoms of virtually any illness. The top of the plant clings to the soil and sends out new roots when it reaches full height. Its many beneficial components, such as D-camphor, manganese, oleanolic acid, rosmarinic acid and tannins, prove that it works a bit like a panacea.

Some of its virtues: antibacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, styptic, tonic and vermifuge. Clinical trials have shown that it stops the growth of Bacillus typhi, E. coli and Mycobacterium tuberculi. Also showing promise for herpes, certain cancers, AIDS, diabetes and other diseases.

Planting tip: Seed stratification is required for 2-4 weeks. Sow indoors 8-10 weeks before frost. Cover seeds for germination. Tolerates dry soil in cooler regions. Transplant mid-spring 12″ to 18″ apart.
Harvesting tip: Harvest aerial parts while in flower. All parts above ground are used for medicine.
Storage tip: Allow to air dry for several days or until completely dried. Store in a paper bag or glass jar out of direct sunlight.
