Start sowing indoors in a soil mix 8 to 12 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Sow the seed 6 mm (1/4 in) deep and germinate at 21-26°C (70-80°F). When seedlings are 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in.) tall, transplant them into individual 10 cm (4 in.) pots and grow at 15 to 21°C. Harden them off and transplant them into the garden after the threat of frost has passed.
The artichoke does best in full sun with deep organic fertile soil. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 in.) apart in the row with rows 1.75 m (6 ft.) apart. Keep plants evenly watered and mulch the soil to help preserve soil moisture and prevent the soil from becoming too hot in summer; if the soil becomes too hot it can trigger a period of summer dormancy. Start with a thin layer of mulch and build it up to 10 cm (4 in) thick as the plants grow. Protect yourself from frost and freezing temperatures during the harvest year.
