Swiss chard grows best in well-drained soils with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Sow seeds about 1 to 2 cm (1/2 to 3/4 in) deep and 2.5 cm (1 in) apart in rows 45 cm (18 in) apart starting in mid-spring . Sowing every two weeks until early summer will ensure a continuous supply. Gradually thin out until they are 10 cm (4 in) apart using the baby lettuce. Harvest the outer leaves first by cutting at the base of the stem, then working toward the center as you go.
