Sow seeds directly outdoors in June, 6 mm (1/4 in) deep in rows 60 cm (24 in) apart. Thin seedlings to 20 cm (8 in) apart within the row. To promote tenderness and discourage bitterness, bundle the inner leaves by tying the larger outer leaves in the center about 7 to 10 days before harvest, make sure the outer leaves are dry when you do this.
