Sow seeds indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost date, use a peat moss growing mix to grow seedlings. The temperature of the seedling mix should be 21 to 24°C (70 to 75°F) for rapid germination. When seedlings are 4 cm (1.75 in) tall, transplant them into individual peat pots, reducing the temperature to 15 to 18°C (59 to 65°F) until planting in the garden at the end of May.

Tomatoes need warm, direct sun and a regular supply of water. Apply water directly to the soil rather than showering it on the plants. Rotate the crop’s position in the garden each year. Dig up and throw away any diseased plants, do not compost. It is also very important to keep plants evenly watered, as fluctuations in soil moisture can lead to a host of problems such as fruit cracking, splitting and the risk of blossom end rot developing.
