Start sowing indoors 10 to 12 weeks before your typical last frost date. Germination occurs in 3 weeks at 21-24 C (70-75 F). After germination, grow seedlings in daylight at a slightly cooler temperature of 60°F (16°C). Harden off and transplant to a sunny garden site from mid-May to mid-June. Fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 is best.
Place plants 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in.) apart in rows 90 cm (36 in.) apart. Whiten the stems by gradually grounding them, starting when they reach about 30 cm (12 in) in height. Feed regularly with a balanced fertilizer. Keeping the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season is absolutely essential for good stem formation.
