Open pollinated chives seeds.
TEMPERATURE: Chives are considered a cool-season crop, meaning they grow best in spring and fall. The higher temperatures of summer usually cause them to go dormant until cool weather returns.
WATER: Although chives are drought tolerant, it is important to water them regularly throughout the growing season to achieve high yields. Moisten the soil well when watering.
Harvest chives leaves about 30 days after transplanting or 60 days after sowing. Be sure to cut the leaves all the way to the base when harvesting (about 1 to 2 inches from the ground). Harvest 3 to 4 times during the first year. In subsequent years, prune the plants monthly. Chives will bloom in late spring or early summer. The flowers are edible and taste best right after they open, they should be well developed and vibrant.
